Colin Dexter vrs Conan-Doyle
10 Answers
How many similarities are there between Dexter's "Inspector Morse" and Conan-Doyle's "Sherlock Holmes".
So far I have:
Both are very cultured
Both are grumpy old bu66ers
Both have a loyal sidekick who is the brunt of the main protagonists frustrations
Both are excellent detectives
Both have vices (Morse likes a beer, Holmes his pipe/opium)
Both have a love of classical music (linked to cultured)
Any others.
Thank you.

Shadow - I had no-one in mind, merely making the pooint that as an archetype there could be similarities.Rebus qualifies for more than most.Vices: Cracker,Bergerac.Loyal sidekick: Barnaby,Bergerac,Cracker,Wexford.
Marlowe is,of course, another archetype and Robert B Parker's Spenser is probably the best modern example of this type of gumshoe.
Shadow,what is a subtitty?Not some kind of sandwich,surely.

>and Jeremy Brett (the best Holmes)
Funny, I never liked him playing Holmes and could not bear to watch it. I found him too creepy.
Even now, when there is a show with him a Holmes on the Sky channels I start to watch it and have to give up after a few minutes.
I liked Robert Stephens in the film Private life of Sherlock Holmes.
