armed forces and their effect on people ?
80 Answers
this was nudged into my head after 4gs talking about how he had caused a lot of pain in the boxing ring and on the battlefield.
now i wonder are we producing a lot of mentally unstable physically agressive men in the army?
if not mentally unstable we certainly are producing a lot of young men very aggressive and sending them off to fight wherever.
but are they a ticking timebomb?
are these guys when they return to civvy street able to return to a 9to5 job?
after possibly killing folk or seeing friends killed?
i wonder over recent years i recall reading about the ex solsdier who shot his whole family.
pschizophrenia i think caused by alleged gulf war syndrome.
and there have been others.
i recall the guy beaten to death by 2 paras , serving i believe , outside a funeral in london.
this isnt a new phenomenon but is it dangerous training folk to kill .
then expecting them to sit at a desk or serve in a shop?
i worry that their agression could manifest itself and people could be hurt.
that aside im wondering if 4gs was indeed joking ?
or if he inflicted the pain and even if he enjoyed it?
i only ask as he posted it .
and i did find it rather strange and disturbing to read

Any ex army I have ever met have always been gents. OK some have a great and often wicked sense of humour but I cant say any of them have been violent. And these are of different ranks etc.
I think a stint in the forces is what many of our youth could do with.

if you have read any of my replies to questions or posts about Army service you will realise that servicemen only take life as a last resort. It's not an easy decision to take, however, if it was my life, or the life of a friend or someone who it was my duty to protect and the enemy, then the enemy would (and did) always come off second best. Since I left the Army in 2004 I have been an Operations Manager at a training + development company, then I ran and sold a business, so, and In am typical of ex servicemen, we can, and do return to 9-5 jobs after military service. Some ex soldiers do have issues with some of the things they did, I have never been affected by these, apart from being a wee bit 'jumpy' when I came back from my first tour of N.I but that's quite normal

wouldnt you think to boast or even brag about it is foolish tho ?
i mean not very clever.
i had a friend.
now sadly dead.
bit of a jack the lad.
joined up.
served in the army.
corporal.
army boxing champion .
lightweight i think maybe middle.
was long time ago
came out the army
dunno what issues he had .
but they found him in a car with a hose on the exhaust pipe.
now i dont know if the army had any effect on him or if it was civvy life or what.
but just always wondered.
added to that your thinking that violence is comical in your post just made me think.
perhaps thats your humour tho eh ?

I agree with the original question entirely. I don't care if our country needs defended. I'm not walking over to a country we have no business being in and just shooting and killing people who are just trying to protect what is theres.
Bush and Blair might be warmongers but they did not go to war. Soldiers went to war. If there were not soldiers there would not be war.
If there is a war memorial when I am older to those who fought in Iraq I will not be laying poppie wreathes on it, no sir.
Think before you act.
What kind of person signs up for this kind of thing anyway?
So what did you do with your life? Oh, killed a few people..............
World War II, slightly different, just war against a mad aggressor. But the modern kind of thing...........no thanks.

Meredith, your answer betrays the fact that you clearly walk around with no real appreciation of what these men and women do for ordinary run of the mill people like you EVERY DAY. You are lucky that you will never ever have to hear about what armed forces personnel have had to do whilst serving just to ensure that you are not forced to wear a hijab every day and get your ankles whipped by the modesty police if you go out in public.
Your answer makes my blood boil.

legend my own stuff was just an afterthought about war in general but I do not want to divert from your main point which is a separate and more important one. You cannot send normal people out, expose them to massive risk to life and ask them to kill then drag them back home to civvy street and expect that everything will be ok.
Why is everything ok for you when you go to work in a deskjob? This is a big question. Why do you just.....get on with people? People are selfish and self-interested. They seem to give this up in a social setting and work for the common good. Hobbes suggested this was an implicit 'Social Contract'. Other theories have come and gone but I think this one has some truth in it.
So where's your 'Social Contract' when you've tried to take someone's life away from them, all they have and all they'll ever have. It's in tatters.
I have friends who are career soldiers. I sometimes wonder it they've really thought it through.

cheries....if you see any of your army buddies, thank them on my behalf for making my country a breeding ground for terrorism and me and my family 4x at greater risk than when they picked up their ickle guns and went and shot at some arabs because tony and george collectively made some 'little mistakes' about the legitimacy of going to war or even if it would work out.
No soldiers, no war.
No soldiers, no war.
Bent double, like old beggars under sacks,
Knock-kneed, coughing like hags, we cursed through sludge,
Till on the haunting flares we turned our backs
And towards our distant rest began to trudge.
Men marched asleep. Many had lost their boots
But limped on, blood-shod. All went lame; all blind;
Drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots
Of disappointed shells that dropped behind.
GAS! Gas! Quick, boys!-- An ecstasy of fumbling,
Fitting the clumsy helmets just in time;
But someone still was yelling out and stumbling
And floundering like a man in fire or lime.--
Dim, through the misty panes and thick green light
As under a green sea, I saw him drowning.
In all my dreams, before my helpless sight,
He plunges at me, guttering, choking, drowning.
If in some smothering dreams you too could pace
Behind the wagon that we flung him in,
And watch the white eyes writhing in his face,
His hanging face, like a devil's sick of sin;
If you could hear, at every jolt, the blood
Come gargling from the froth-corrupted lungs,
Obscene as cancer, bitter as the cud
Of vile, incurable sores on innocent tongues,--
My friend, you would not tell with such high zest
To children ardent for some desperate glory,
The old Lie: Dulce et decorum est
Pro patria mori.
