Breathing- something that bugs me...
19 Answers
I've recently started going to a yoga class at my gym (well, I've been twice) and my instructor said something that made me wonder: that we should try and get used to yogic breathing (only breathing through your nose). Now, I know that we're born only breathing through our noses and that breathing through our mouths is learnt, but I always breathe through my nose! I can breathe through my mouth (luckily, otherwise I'd be screwed when I have a cold!), but I rarely do.
It's just made me think; everyone I know sleeps and breathes through their mouths, so is it me that's the odd one? Without the obvious answer, please! :o)

Your nose is like an air conditioner for your lungs. Air that passes through your nose on the way to your lungs is filtered and heated by the nose. Your nose will massively reduce the amount of dust, pollens, bacteria, virus, or anything else that is floating in the air.
These things would cause major problems if there were allowed to flow straight down into the lungs. The nose is designed to handle them. It is your first line of defence. If you breathe through your mouth you do not use these defences.

LOL! My sister had to stay at mine on Saturday night after we'd been out, and that's what got me thinking about it again (after the yoga stuff). She's a nightmare to share a room with, let alone a bed, because she keeps me awake with her various noises and snoring. Then I thought about it and my boyfriend had said a few months ago he couldn't believe how quiet I am when I sleep and that you can't hear me breathe, so I thought it might be down to that.
A tad long winded, I know. It's just been one of those boring Mondays today. :o)

Having taught Yoga for nearly 30 years I'm amazed that the teacher should say that most people need to be taught to breathe through their noses. Nose breathing warms, filters and moistens the air (as squarebear said) but most people do it anyway. There is one Yoga breathing technique ('sitali') that requires mouth breathing.
A few people do tend to mouth breathe but that is generally because of a structural problem with their nose - this can lead to snoring at night and bad breath.
You are quite normal whiskeysheri!

The term "mouth breather" may be used in a pejorative sense for someone lacking in hygiene or intelligence.
