Should kids be kept in schools at lunchtimes to keep them away from fast food?

Glasgow council has been encouraged to stop children from leaving school grounds at lunchtimes. The idea is to stop them from going and getting fast food and so keep them healthier. Is this really the answer? Or is it a step too far in restricting kids freedom?

thats the point funny, if they are educated to eat properly they will have no desire to eat the slops at mc donalds.....

I honestly think that however well kids eat at home and how well educated they are about food they all go through a stage of loving McDonalds and other fast food. Kids will eat it anyway and you can't stop them going to parties, etc. or going to other kid's houses where McDonalds type food is served.

Most of them grow out of it and I am not in favour of them being denied the odd McDonalds, etc. Unfortunately, there are some kids whose families eat junk food regularly and that is where the problem is.

You know you're an 'old folk' when you start to preface your statements with "I remember when....."! However, I do remember when I was going to school we had the choice of taking sandwiches or having our parents pay a yearly fee for hot lunches. I had to take sandwiches: sometimes sliced apple! We were allowed to escape at lunch-time, but all we did was play around town and probably make a general nuisance of ourselves. The point is we did not have any money to spend on outside food. How much pocket-money are these kids getting in order to wreak such gastronomical havoc upon their bodies? Perhaps their allowances should be cut down?

We didnt have the choice of taking sandwiches til we were 11. Til we got to about 14 and discovered girls and smoking we never wanted to leave school at dinner time we just wanted to play football and crazy bulldog lol

If parents aren't going to feed their children properly at home then what do you expect. People don't know how to cook any more and rely on ready meals and takeaways. Some kids don't even know what a cucumber or a tomato is.

According to statistics we in Britain are the worst fast food offenders and we have the highest obesity problem in Europe. Doesn't surprise me.

Its a ridiculous idea!
I agree with you all that everyone will just find other ways to get their fast food.
I live in Glasgow and we get let out at lunch, but the only places that you can get to are a Greggs, a newagents and a place that makes panninis and baguettes.
When people leave our school at lunch they are getting relatively healthy sandwiches or panninis from the two food places. And to be honest, they're probably alot healthier than the school meals !
Maybe if school meals weren't so horrible, kids might actually consider eating them, and they are ridiculously overpriced in my school !
