Dog Booster complications??

Hi,
I took my dog in for his annual booster and less than 24 hours later my dog became extremely ill. He has been bleeding from the stomach and tests show he has critically low blood platlets. The vet is very nice but we concerned the booster is the reason as nothing else makes sense for such a dramatic change. Has anyone had any problems with dog booster vaccinations and in particular if anyone knows about Schering-Plough Animal Health Procyon? Anything to help please as he is not picking up despite a cocktail of drugs.

Sorry to hear about your poor dog.
I am afraid I know nothing about the problem you mentioned., but I do fell for you for what you are going through at the moment.
I am sure your Vet will do everything he can do.

Oh Ickle Bug, you poor thing, and your poor dog. I have no idea in terms of medication and causes, but I feel terrible for you both. Please update us ASAP.

I had a bitch a few years ago who had her annual booster, she was around 8 years old at the time. We came home, and she immediately went down the garden and was sick. She continued to be violently sick and had diahroah for the next hour or so, until there was nothing else left inside her and the noise she was making was horrific. I called the vet and he met me at the surgery, he gave her an anti vac and wanted to keep her in overnight on a drip. I thought we were going to lose her and wanted to bring her home, but had to syringe fluids into her every day throughout the night. She went into the vets the next day to be put on a drip. She made a full recovery, but needless to say she never had another vaccination in her life.

I hope your dog pulls through ok, I would ask the vet to contact the physicians at Schering-Plough for advice first thing in the morning. You could also contact Catherine Driscoll who is very knowledgeable on the subject of dog vaccines and very helpful.

The vet should report this reaction to the company who provide the vaccines, they record all reported adverse reactions. You could contact the company yourself and speak to customer services and check that this has been done.

Personally I never usually vaccinate dogs once their puppy course has been given, unless there is an outbreak of something in my area, or as is the case at present I have a dog going abroad, and they have to be up to date with their jabs.

Thank you all for your kind words and really helpful advise. Having read the links sent I'm not just really worried about Olly but also quite angry re vaccinations. You just do it because you want to look after them. I'll post a reply to let you know how he gets on.

Hi Ickle Bug - do hope your canine friend is on the mend, please do keep us posted with his/her progress.

So far none of our dogs have shown any bad reactions to vaccinations but my Siamese cat reacted badly to her vacc -. vomiting and off her food for a few days, and as she was an 'indoor cat' and about 7 years when this happened, she was never vaccinated again.

In my years of looking after dogs and cats I've come across this problem several times, Seven of the dogs I used to walk had very bad reactions after their jabs, one ( my brother's dog ) had some sort of fit and lost the use of her back legs, one dog died on the way home after having the jab and another died after being rushed to the vet 3 hours after having her booster. I know these are fairly rare cases but it does make you worried. Personally if I had a dog of my own I would let it have the puppy jabs and then maybe another booster at a year old. You can get them tested every year to see if they are still immune. Sorry if I've worried you Ickle Bug but I think people should know about these things. I really hope your little one will be okay, keep us informed. Gelda x
