hello, please tell me why, yes i know 1 in 3 people get cancer, and everyone knows someone with/had cancer, but they get soo much and are well donated too, but what about all the other endless charities also who have a low profile? animals would be one of my faves,
you know red, you post could be deemed as nagging or cold calling....
I agree with Red, my mum died of lung cancer.
I get annoyed when Im constantly told to donate to charities, when I do I then get told that my donation isnt enough and they keep on pestering for more.

I donate to charity, If I had money I would donate to a lot more of them.
i support the Donkey charity, i have a fridge magnet
I much prefer to take my hard earned money and personally give it to the person needing it. That way you know someone has got your money.
As good as your intentions are Redhead I'm sure we all have our favourite charities. I personally prefer to support small local charities or the Lifeboats. I used to work for a bank in London at which many of the large charities used to bank and they had millions sat in accounts just earning interest whilst they spent a fortune on adverts to get people to donate more. I thought they could have used some of that money for the projects they were advertising for money for. Also I HATE it when it when national charities do mail drops with free pens and stuff, why are they spending all that money like that?
Not that I personally have anything against this charity, my Mother died from cancer three and a half years ago.
Can I just have a wee rant while this post is about?
One of my colleagues at work has a young daughter who has cerebal palsy and needs to wear special shoes and a splint on her arm. She was told this splint isn't available on the NHS and has thankfully been able to buy the necessary equipment from a local charity. It cost nearly 600 and the little girl is only 2. I shudder to think how much it will cost to get a bigger one when she is older. It's stuff like that that makes me aware of how much little less well known charities rely just as much, if not more, on our donations.

well Im saving at the moment to make my back garden secure and accessable for my disabled children, I have had no help from the charity that supports their disability...

Im not the only person either, these charities make a fortune but how much of it goes to the front line and helps people with the disablity live a day to day life?

I dont donate to the big charities, I donate to local charities where you see a difference

I give as much as I can to charity. but I will not give a penny to fund research that will cause pain and suffering to any animal. And YES, I have lost numerous friends and family to cancer.
I do exactly like Funnygirl does. I used to donate and volunteer a lot to various charities. Then I realised the more I give and do, the more I was pressured and expected to give and do. I cut ties from all of them and now personally put money in the needy persons' hand.
I used to have a standing order for Cancer Research, but they continually badgered me to increase the amount (which I did several times) and in the end I cancelled it.

Although I still put money in collecting boxes, simply because I cannot pass them by, I now support MacMillan Nurses and the hospices - both excellent causes.

Incidentally, my family does suffer from a genetic cancer, so I know how valuable cancer research is. However, having been heavily involved in my professional life with several major charities, I have seen the waste and abuse of funds - and I've also seen the State of the Art Head Offices and the expense accounts paid for from those funds.
I understand what you mean Naomi. One of the organisations I contributed to - the top executives took funds to go on cruses.
where do you draw the line? i try my best with charitys and would like to help them all if i had the funds , but i do find you get pestered once you give a donation , i do try and spread it a bit because i wouldnt like to be in there position
RED, you meant well. I can empathise with everyone's thoughts about charities - we all have our favourites and that's great, they all get a share. I for one give to Cancer Research, purely because I lost my dear husband to this awful disease and I like to think I can help stop anyone else going through what he went through and what I and our son have had to go through since he died. I also give to the RSPB and Macmillan. Much as I love animals, I would never give to the RSPCA. I don't agree with their principals, the same as others on this thread may not agree with research into medical conditions.
