what is scope&limitation of this experiment?
experiment:Kamote Tops, Rose Petals, and Red Onion as Alternative to Litmus Paper
Procedure:
*Making Litmus liquids
1.Rose petals
-Put Red rose petals in HCI and leave it for around 3 hours
-Filter HCI
-put a filter paper(gauze) around 5 minutes and dry.
2.Red onion
-Cut a red onion into pieces and put them into Bunsen burner
-pour a water into Bunsen burner and boil
-when color has soaked out, turn off the burner and cool it.
-filter the liquid
3. Kamote tops
-Get kamote leaves(tops)
*testing indicators
1.Rose petal indicator
-put vinegar, soapy water, and baking soda into indicator (one by one)
-observe a change of color of indicator
( If you had put a vinegar, a color should be changed into red.
If you had put a soapy water, a color should be changed into light green
If you had put a baking soda, a color should be changed into light green.)
2. Red onion indicator
-put vinegar, soapy water, and baking soda into indicator (one by one)
-observe a change of color of indicator
( If you had put a vinegar, a color should be changed into red.
If you had put a soapy water, a color should be changed into light green
If you had put a baking soda, a color should be changed into light green.)

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I think the cope of the experiment is the strength of the acid or alkali needed to produce these colour changes. does it work still for weak acids and alkalies . Also the experiment will not tell you the pH of your acid/alkali as will only say if above or below pH 7 . Universal indicator would give a more acurate result. In the rose petal experiment if all of the HCL is not filtered off and a little remains the result would be incorrect as a weak alkali would just neutralise the HCL and not give appropriate colour change. Hope this helps a little.
