Horse Droppings

I have been told that horse droppings are quite safe unlike other faecal matter. Surely there must be germs therein?
Any comments?

I'd still wear gloves if I was forking it on to my roses! - it is true, however, that horse manure is less liable to contain "nasty" bacteria and parasites than dog or cat faeces. We frequently see a mounted police patrol in our area and the horses regularly "misbehave" on paths and roadways. My wife has often commented on the disparity between the dog owner who is forced to clean up after Fido whereas the horse leaves much more of a mess behind and "gets away with it". It has to be said, however, that within a relatively short time it seems to dry up and disperse quite naturally.

Thank you dundurn. I have a photograph of a pavement where a horse has left its calling card spread over some 20feet.. A horse woman the other day said, very forcibly, that it was completely harmless. I can't see it myself.
When a boy and there were horse-drawn coal carts etc we would dash out with bucket and spade to collect for the garden -- trying to beat the neighbours! But we didn't handle it.

Rescuer, I've heard there are those in the horsey community who, when clearing up after their darlings, do so 'by hand' and without the protection of gloves.

I'm not sure whether that means it's safe or just that these people are beyond caring, or possibly immune in some way.

I only know you wouldn't get me doing it that way!

Dogs faeces contain harmful bacteria unlike horses. I read something on this not too long ago, can't remember the main reason but it has a reason.

Thanks saxy..iag and Jenga. My father had an allotment and he would have a cart-load delivered each year from one of the traders who had a horse and cart. It would be steaming. But we didn't handle it. It was of course sweeter smelling than any other faecal matter.
