hair dye help!

My hair is naturally medium to dark brown and I dyed it with a permanent at home dye which was a couple shades lighter than my natural hair. The results were awful and uneven, and the last time I dyed my hair was a couple years ago. The color turned out light near the roots and did nothing to the rest of my hair. So I tried again, a while later dying it back to my natural color and then it turned some sort of red! All I really want now is my natural color back. What should I do?

That sounds exactly the same as what happened to me, the first part anyway. in my experience, i think the rule for home-dying is to always go darker, and the only time you should do it lighter, is if youre goin totally blonde, as it all strips to the same colour. to get it back to the original colour, if you go to a hairdressers, they can actually strip any dye from your hair, back to the original colour, though i dont know how much it costs or what condition it leaves it in. hope i was of some help

Hi, ive done many home job dyes- the dye you used probably contained some peroxide, hair at the root it fresh,warm (virgin hair its called), so it will take a hair dye well, the middle parts are not so fresh, and the ends are dead hair, which also may have had some previous dye on, so its very hard to get an even colour right away. the only way ive ever got it right is persistance- firstly- what length is your hair? what colour did you put on recently? what colour did you put on two years ago? and finally what condition is your hair in- prior to this last dye job, greasy,normal,dry? split ends? once you tell me that i may be able to help.
