What's the best suntan lotion to get a tan? I tend to find I either burn and then go brown or if I put cream on to stop burning I don't get any colour at all.

My mum has always avoided the sun and she has lovely skin whereas her two sisters were real sunworshippers and now have skin like an old handbag. I am therefore quite happy to go pale!

I use factor 30 and reapply frequently and I still tan very well, Ive only ever burned the tops of my thighs at the back and that was a long, long time ago. Its more than likely just your genetic make up. People seem to think that because I am dark haired and dark skinned in the summer, I need less factor but I don't fancy skin damage anymore than the next person. I'm scared of wrinkles way more than I am. Keep up with the high factor and you will eventually go brown if that is how your skin should naturally be.
My sister in law who I used to envy so much for her attractiveness and glamour has been a sunworshipper all her life. We are the same age and now she looks very old and very wrinkly and her skin looks like leather. (It hasn't helped that she also used to smoke non stop). I now feel very pleased that I have been pale and interesting (well not very interesting) for all my long life.
I agree with pale and interesting....as a redhead I have always had trouble tanning. what is tan for me is washed out for anyone else!!!....But now I have very few wrinkles (at 60) and I am very happy with that!...I would still like to have a bit of tan,but even the hint of tan moistureisers don't give me much colour-lol....so it is just my lot to be pale.
If you don't mind getting a full hit of UVA (the one that makes you tan... but also makes you wrinkle) then P20 is the best for getting a tan. It lets all the UVA through but blocks out the burning UVB. You only apply it once - and have to wait for it to 'bond' to your skin. But then you can go swimming etc and not have to reapply it all day. I used it while trekking round Israel and Egypt and didn't burn once (professional cyclists etc use it too). I have loads of friends who get a great tan using it - sadly I don't - I'm fair skinned and just get a few more freckles, but I love the way I never burn using it.
One word of warning though - do a test patch before putting it over fake tan. I went to V Festival a few years ago and built up a great St Tropez fake tan - then applied P20 on my first day and went bright - and I mean BRIGHT -yellow! Spent the weekend with everyone calling me 'Teletubby'. Nice! Must have been some sort of chemical reaction!
