I bought a 'chemical' one a long time ago (Swedish) and it wasn't as cheap but it works.

Friend of mine who is into computers said they should be called "portables", rather than "laptops" because you shouldn't put them on your lap. Because:
1. They can overheat (as you have discovered!); and
2. The hard disk is spinning at a very fast rate. Moving the computer could cause the hard disk to move, and touch the surrounding housing, and then your data would be lost.
So ... carry it around but, when you are going to switch it on and use it, find a hard, static surface.

have the same problem with mine as the fans are on the bottom of it - solve the problem by getting something the same sort of size as your laptop e.g. tray, book etc. and use it to lean on. work brilliantly - mine is currently an old book of my son's which i taped shut - is the perfect size and no more toasted knees!
