Anyone been for a bone density test?

The first couple done over 3 years were where you sit in a seat and rest your forearm on an armrest. Then over less than 15 mins the wrist and forearm are scanned .
The next 2 over the last 2 years have been of the lumbar and the rest of the spine , and the neck ,all done as you lie down and the scanner moves around you for about half an hour. They look for osteoporosis , osteopenia , and any changes caused from arthritis and spondylosis in my ones.

As far as I know it's going to be the heel area? Not for any specific reason. I have thyroid & osteoporosis is linked? xxx

Well it will be able to give a report on the state of your bone density , that is , if you are showing any signs of osteoporosis for example. It will be able to tell you if you have enough calcium intake and that your body is using it to keep your bones healthy.

well, its a bit different if you're just having it on spec, because you want one - i can't imagine that if you are a reasonably healthy young person it will tell you anything earth shattering, either it will tell you you have osteoporosis or that you dont have it.
I had one because of all the steroids ive had to take over the years - they wanted to see if they had given me osteoporosis and they had, therefore i was ablr to start taking yet another medication. Yippee!

Meant to say, I haven't osteoporosis, but theres a greater predisposition to get osteoporosis in people with thyroid xxx

Mine took about 10 minutes two years ago. I don't know what I was expecting but it was totally stress free and was over before I had even thought about it. I had to wait 6 weeks for the results. I had mine due to fracturing a vertebrae and they were testing for osteoporosis. Absolutely nothing to worry about and I promise you I am a complete wimp when it comes to medical tests!

Hi lofty, sorry, no I'm not in the least worried. I just wondered on the merit of the testing, whether it was worthwhile? I've got the test for 22.00 My mum is also having the test with me, both thyroid sufferers.

My daughter had hers done a few weeks ago at the Bristol vegan fair - it took longer to answer the questions than it did to have the test. She just had to put her foot into a machine that looked like a foot spa.

Hi again. Yes skyep, it was worthwhile. The test proved I had thinning bones and had borderline osteoporosis (to add to all the other ailments!!)
