what does enigma mean?

I would use it as another word for a mystery.

"It is an enigma as to why the sky is blue for those who do not understand weather systems"

Churchill, in describing Russia in 1939 said "...a riddle wrapped in mystery inside an enigma" ..

The term is probably more intense that a mystery. By implication, a mystery can be solved, not so with an enigma...something that baffles understanding and cannot be explained.... according to one source...
