People who believe it is wrong to have sexual intercourse before marriage and where the man expects his wife to be a virgin, will probably expect her to bleed the first time they have sex
Even in the UK, up until the 1960's women were expected to remain virginal until marriage, however, this was often not the case, so the mother's of these girls would hang the bed sheets on the washing line, following the wedding night and often smear animal blood on them, so the neighbours would see the bloodied sheet and believe the bride had been a virgin.
Because women are so much more active these days, with sporting activities, hores riding, gym and also tampon use, the Hymen, (membrane which partially covers the entrance to the vagina, but is supposedly broken through first sex) no longer remains intact. So in actual fact, some women will bleed and some won't when they first have sex. It does not mean a woman is not necessarily a virgin if she does not bleed.
