Hi abstract - sorry to hear you're in so much pain. Yes it isn't unusual to feel pain afterwards. I had some some root work a couple of years back and the pain afterwards was so bad I went back to the dentist in case something had gone wrong. They said that there is a lot of really deep work which affects the nerve and this can cause considerable pain later for a while but it should wear off in a couple of days. Mine did so I would keep taking the antibiotics and pain killers. Obviously if it gets worse or doesn't die down by the end of the weekend you may need to see someone. Hope it goes soon - there's not a lot worse than bad toothache.

Although the tooth now has no nerve, the gums around it do have nerve endings and this why it hurts. The root of the tooth will have been pulled around in your gum to some extent and the gum is likely to be bruised and sore - and you know how pain radiates in your mouth.
If the painkillers don't seem to be having enough effect, then check with your pharmacist if there's anything else you can safely take. If the answer is no, then try to get back to see your dentist asap. Pain is normal, but not good, a surgeon once told me after an op. It causes stress and hinders healing and we should never feel bad about being a little 'babyish' over it.
