A Cautionary Tail For Naive ABers

Hi all I am writing here as a greenie, to save any arguments, but im sure at least a few of you can work out who I am. Here is my story. A number of months ago I make friends with a few people on AB and swapped email addresses with them. This ment I got included on group emails (you know the type) and that gave other ABers I didn't know much access to my email to (they could work out who i was from my email lol) This was fine, until a certain someone (who got banned yesterday) asked me to back him up in an argument, i had nothing to do with. Because I refused he singled me out and over the past few months he has become increasingly abusive on email. I changed my email address which caused problems with hubby (he thought I was upto something!!!). All this could have been provented if I hadn't give out my email. If you do give it out then always BCC on group emails. Hopefully since the user.isbanned , he will think about his attitude, as will I reacess what info I provide on the net x x x

no way I never give my private email out until I can trust someone with it. Well I guess you have learnt your lesson

I have given out a disposable email address on here - I haven't used it for ages, any emails sent to it are bounced right back to the sender.

You do have to be careful.

Both your AB username and the associated email should be anonymous. When you re-register with AB, set up a new email specifically for the purpose.

We're all guilty of giving too much info out on here, we get comfy and believe that everyone is as nice as we'd like them to be.

Sorry you've been victimised sheepishly, I've a feeling I know who you're on about, quite a few of us are really really really grateful that user doesn' have our email addresses I can you!

Who were you, sheepishly? I don't see why you've any reason to be embarrassed!

I set up an email address specifically to give out on AB, but I have still blocked plenty of them from it. :) I've only given out my number when I'm as sure as I can be that I trust that person and I haven't lived to regret it yet. :)

Being a mardy, selective, grumpy cow does have it's upside! I think I can still count on the fingers of both hands who has my actual address on here and on one hand those that have my number.

Emails can be very useful though.

I had a very abusive email from an Ab-er, which I ignored.

Interestingly it had the very same headers as another AB-er who had emailed me in a very friendly way, but was criticising yet another AB-er and wanted my backing.

So obviously these two AB-ers are the same person. Both blocked, and I don't use that email account any more so no more personal communications with me.

Anyone who gives out their genuine email address to people who (let's face it) you do not know, is a fool and deserves all they get.

Yes Another-view I agree with you. I have seen it over and over again on here it all starts quite innocent then in a few weeks that person is calling the other and it ends up in a slanging match and one ab er on here got that frightened someone had actually put out her home address .I don't think you need me to tell you who that was as she did give out a lot of info about herself. I never get involved I might say my piece but thats it's .You do not know who you are talking too.

Exactly, my genuine email is used by friends and familiy who I know and trust. Quite why anyone would also give out that info to someone on the other end of a message board really does stagger me.

Thanks for the advice. It is for this reson why i have never gone on the Face Book site . I believe people have put up photographs of their family and pets showing the houses they live in. It is worrying to think who may look at those pictures.

It is quite frightening how much information it is possible to glean about any one user because of the information they post quite voluntarily on this site.

Anyone that makes themselves, their full name, their home or work address identifiable must be potty.

But isn't it more the fault of the people like iam.legend who send out the offensive unsolicited emails! How am I in the wrong!

Luckily I am not naive, i know exactly how he works, I emailed the ed at length last night after his second thread proclaiming that he had proved the usrs of the site were predominantly racist.

The ed agreed that it was inciteful and meant to goad people into an argument
