Rule of perfume buying?

If you're buying perfume for your girlfriend should it be a perfume that I like the smell of or should it be what she would like to smell of?

well, you should have an idea of what she wears.
I personally don't like over powering ones or very strong smelling ones - they tend to give me a headache.
There are perfumes I used to wear years ago that are too strong for me now.
I like subtle ones, so go for something you know she like & you'll have to get to like it! lol
& just in case you don't know - I'm a female!

Preferably both but more so what she likes if it comes to it.

It would be a waste if she never wore it as she didn't like the smell.

Chanel no.5 is awful,I have found that more men like that particular fragrance than the women they buy it for.

My husband bought me Chanel No.5 for years cos he liked it, but it wasn't me. I now wear Chanel Mademoiselle which we both like.
I'd take her out to a perfume shop and have an hour or so choosing one you'd both like - it'll be fun and you know she'll wear it.

Perfume is a very individual thing...both physically and emotionally. It will react differently on everyone's skin-so it is no good buying something because it smells good on someone else. Also...never go by how it smells in the bottle,or or on one of those little tester cards. It has got to be on the skin for several hours to get the true effect.
I would definitely leave the choice to her...it could be a very costly mistake otherwise.

Most women have a favourite perfume. Mine is by Issey Miyake. I would hate it if someone bought me a perfume just because they liked it. Have you considered buying her body lotions, bath oils etc to match her favourite fragrance. These are things I wouldn't feel justified in buying myself, but would love it if someone bought them for me. Good luck. Merry Christmas.

I have been wearing Opium by Yves Sain Laurent for years & it's the only one that I particularly like & which suits me.

My husband has always liked it too & when I was at work & even now, so many people ask what perfume I'm wearing.

Years ago, my husband used to buy me Picot by Pagan, which was equally as nice, but they stopped selling it.

Ask her what she wants; at least you cant get ear'ole for buying the wrong stuff then. Golden rule of buying presents -woman are absolutely nuts and not capable of thought de la rationale.

What smells nice on one person might smell awful on another - it's a very personal thing. So what smells nice on the woman at work or the girl on the perfume counter won't necessarily be the same on your girlfriend.

I'd suggest you ask her (or her friend or a member of her family) what her favourite is. Either that or discreetly riffle through her bathroom cupboard or her handbag. She will appreciate this far more than a surprise bottle of something you like.

smudge, opium is a very serious parfum only used at night hopefully its sooooooooo overpowering, i was so glad that i got bought sensous by estee lauder for a night out delicious, but love femme by boss,you have to realise that some parfums are so the night and not day otherwise cant breathe!!!

Depends on your personality, I think, puddicat. I like Poison. That's quite heavy but if I have it available for daytime use then I'll use it - it's me and I'm not going to wear any sickly sweet Estee Lauder (sorry, all EL fragrances smell that way to me) for anyone's money.

I use Opium Eau De Toilette spray puddi, which is fine for me day or night.

As saxy_jag says, it depends on the individual - also, plastering any perfume on your body could be overpowering, but I don't, it's too expensive! ;o}

why dont you buy a unisex one? A lot of the brands do them now. I like marc jacobs daisy =0) for women tho!

Agent Provocateur - one small spray lingers beautifully, especially on a top of jacket, and I've never known it to stain, but as others've said, buying perfume for someone else isn't easy, unless you know exactly what they like.
