Painful knee

Several years ago I whacked my knee really hard on a doorframe, managing to chip a tiny bit off the kneecap. A couple of years ago I tripped and landed heavily on the same knee. Ever since then I can feel soft stuff on top of my kneecap which I can move beneath my fingers (sorry - gross!). My knee aches and sometimes is really painful. I mentioned it to my GP a couple of months ago, but he just said it could be cyst, but surely a cyst wouldn't last this long? Has anyone had a similar injury, or knee problem. I haven't a clue what it is, or how to treat it. Thanks.

I think that your Dr. is correct....just Google "supra-patella bursa. A bursa can last forever and may only need treatment if ti causes problems i.e pain or becomes infected.

Thanks, that was really useful. I was surfing last night but couldn't find anything as I didn't have a specific thing to look up. You've been a great help.
