Most women ovulate around the 14th day of their cycle.  You are most likely to conceive around that day.  You can chart your ovulation by watching your body temp.  Your temp will raise slightly during ovulation.

Hiya i have tried all of the following to find out my ovulation date and none of them have worked:

using the tests you pee on,

your temperature and

the microscope you check your saliva with!!

I would advise you to got to the docs to make sure you are ovulating because it has taken me three yrs of trying before the silly doc has found out im not ovulating!! Good luck and dont get stressed!!!

They make kit just like the pregnancy tests that will tell you if you are ovulating. Watch for a change in body temp like janey78 said. The kits work well too if you can afford them. I say just have lots of sex it's fun anyway! lol

They say that between days 8 and 19 of your cycle, if you don't want to conceive, you should be very careful.  That was my guide for when I did want to concieve and it worked just fine.

They say a woman ovulates 14 days BEFORE her NEXT period is due, so it's the 14th day only if one has a 28 day cycle. I actually KNOW the date on which my daughter was conceived, because I only "saw" her father once in that month. And it was on the 8th day of my cycle, when it should have been 'safe'. It seems to be an "old wives tale", but I've heard that 'y' (male) sperms swim fast, so reach the ovum quickly, but are short-lived. On the other hand 'x' (girl) sperms have longevity and swim slower. I think the best advice is to 'do it' often and enjoy it!

I have a slightly longer than normal cycle about 30-32 days.  I always made sure we made love plenty from days 13 - 16 and had absolutely no problems falling pregnant (now have 3 bless em).  So maybe you should pinpoint the exact "middle day" and do it a couple of days either side too.

Doctor's advice is to have sex every other day of your cycle because you don't necessarily ovulate on the text book day and that way you are most likely to 'catch' the egg when it's released. Sperm can live for up to 5 days inside you though so you never know!

I've heard that too secretspirit.  Does anyone know why they say every other day?  Why not every day?

One reason for sex every couple of days is that sperm is produced daily and once produced its quality and motility deteriorate so abstinence of more than a couple of days could actually decrease your likelihood of conception.  Unless of course he's taking matters into his own hands...

 

zgma - don't know if this is right medically but I was told that one of the reasons for saying every other day is that people can feel  pressured to 'perform' when they're trying to conceive so unless doing it daily is their normal routine anyway it can end up just being stressful (which is bad for your chances of conception). So doing it regularly every couple of days is meant to maximise your chances without tiring everyone out!
