Genes? If I remember rightly then countless, huge amounts. There are 42 pairs of chromosomes though. I'm thinking back a few years though.
yes a huge amount. I believe they recently finished the human genome project so have a look for that on google.

From this I'd say about 3,000,000,000 pairs of bases. Incidentally, a DNA strand stretched out is approximately 6ft long. DNA is in every cell in the body which has a nucleus, which is pretty amazing...
