Junk mail charity appeals where they send you money.
My elderly mother is constantly plagued with charity junk mail, containing heartbreaking accounts of the plight of people abroad whom the charity says it helps. This mail frequently contains coins - usually 12p, or little tiny dolls. I have heard that many of these organisations are bogus. I have put her name on the mailing preference list, but it takes a while to become effective. My main concern is that I am suspicious that she sometimes feels sorry for these imaginary people and sends cheques for small amounts to these chartities without letting on to me, thereby encouraging them, whilst I'm trying to stop them!! The most recent one I am aware of is World Villages for Children. Anyone got any proof I can show her to bring her to her senses? Thanks.

Some years ago I tried very hard to check out the World Villages for Children and got nowhere. All the various church bodies in this country and the countries they are supposed to be in knew nothing about them or HAD heard of them and said they were bogus. When I tried to alert the Charities Commission they didn't want to know.
They still send me money presumably because I was taken in at the beginning.
I pocket the 12p!
