Thought I'd just post this on here in case this ever happens to you.

Had the worst night of my life.

My daughter has always had slightly solid nappies. she is regular and has loose ones also. but the last week or so its been looking like its been a struggle for her

Took her to the doctors last week and they said its nothing to worry about and to reducer her iron intake as they don't like to give babies laxatives.

She had a normal dirty nappy this afternoon then was about to start getting her ready for bed tonight and she was grumpier than normal. When we took the nappy off it looked like there was blood in it and when i started cleaning her up she was screaming and the wipe was covered in blood. We couldn't see where the blood was coming from

Tried to stay as calm as possible and called the on call doctor. As we live on an island off an island its not so easy just to drive to a hospital. Couldn't get a hold of her the first few times so panic was kicking in and we weren't thinking straight and associating the bleeding with her constipation. Thankfully we got the doc and went to the surgery and all is well now. She has piles, poor wee lady

So if this ever happens to you and you have a slightly constipated baby this is what it could be. Once we were calm and waiting on the doc to arrive we clicked that it could be piles but it was not a nice feeling not being able to get the doc

i'll be sleeping on the floor of her room tonight and the doctor just said to call if there is any bother through the night.

what amazed me is she had a dirty nappy this afternoon and it was fine and her bum was normal.

when the doctor was checking her. her bum was bright red. she had a slightly runny nappy when there was blood and the doctor said you can basically see that it was a firey nappy and if thats what its done to her outside imagine whats happened to her insides.

i couldn't believe the change from just changing her nappy a few hours earlier.
Must have been awful for you and so frightening. Glad it didn't turn out ot be anything worse. Bad enough it being piles. All sorts of things go through your mind don't they?

Hope you and your little one manage to get some sleep and she'll be much better in the morning.
I've never heard of this. you need to be having serious talks with your doctor about diet etc
How old is the baby?
Hi Carron - how old is she, could she be teething? My son used to have almost toxic nappies when he was teething - they used to burn his skin within minutes if you didn't get it off. Hope the wee one is alright now.

Hi

She's nearly 10 months. She has a really good, varied and balanced diet. Everything is home cooked and she gets a healthy portion served up every meal time and has a good mix of fruit, veg, fish, chicken and beef. Cut the beef out last week as that has iron in it.

I had been giving her prunes mixed in with her meals but they didn't make any difference

The only recent change to her diet is the follow on milk which the doctor did say contains a lot of iron but never sugested any brand to change to.

Going to see the health visitor tomrrow to see if she can recommend a different type of milk but i had a brows in the shop and they all seem to have added extra iron. As we live on an island the selection isn't the best!!!

it was just horrible, we couldn't see where the blood was coming from and if it was stopping

Hi annie

forgot to say, thats what the doctor said. Its mainly a teething problem.

My friends wee one was the same. no one believed her when she said her daughter was constipated whilst teething because most babies are the opposite and have exploding nappies
Sounds like you are doing everything that you can, if she is eating well and has other dairy products, you could probably cut her milk down and substitute water to help with the constipation - keep her as active as you can as well, what cereal does she have? I would recommend Weetabix made with milk and pureed fruit as extra fibre.

Everyones system is different, she may just have a sluggish bowel as well as the teething issue.

Water and exercise will be the best help - there is a school of thought that dried fruits make it worse as they reabsorb water in the gut - don't know if that is true though, however, if you are giving her prunes, make sure they are soaked and not dried.
i was tought baby massage few weeks ago and the tummy ones are apparently really good for helping with constipation and wind.
you could ask your health visitor if its available, it would atleast make you feel like your doing something to help if it happens again?
ah poor girl and poor you too, it must of been awful for the both of you, if i saw that in my 1 year olds nappy i wouldnt know what to do. glad to hear its nothing serious xxx
Follow on milk may contain extra iron, but from doing loads of research the extra iron does not get absorbed by your baby - however the fab healthy diet she is eating will give her the necessary amount. The iron in this milk is synthetic and therefore not absorbed effectively enough to count. Doing the reading that I have done about formula, I also discovered that in some brands, the iron content was higher in first milks than the follow on

Swap back to your from birth milk - I suspect very strongly that this is why your baby is 'suffering' as she has been.

Follow on milks only exists so that formula companies have a way arond the fatc they cannot advertise their brand

Good luck
