The pain after tonsilectomy is due to spam of the palatal muscles...palato pharyngeus and palatoglossus.
To relieve the spasm, they need to be worked....brought into action.
Soft mushy foods are swallowed without the use of the palatal muscles
Crisps, cornflakes ect need action of these muscles, which relieve the spasm, which relieves the pain.
That simple....nothing to do with cleansing of the raw area.

I had my tonsils out last year (and my god it was painful!). They do tell you to eat toast. Although its painful, its almost like you have an itchy throat and the toast scratches it.
I don't know if you're just asking or if you are getting your tonsils out. If you're getting them out I found tea to be very soothing and take the painkillers at regular intervals before the pain kicks in!
