re.my post on kidney failure last week.
Hi Sqad. my father is now in hospital, they tried to insert a catheter but did not succeed due to the intense pain...my father told them to stop.
What would be the reason for them not being able to insert?
Anyone else had this problem and how did you overcome it?
Many Thanks Chrissey xx

Chrissy....do you mean a venous catheter or a catheter into his bladder?
Question Author
sqad............into his bladder
OK...the problem is that his prostate is enlarged, blocking the urethra and not allowing the catheter to pass.

Not an uncommon situation.

Catheterisation in the NHS is usually done by the House Surgeon...the most junior of all the Drs. In that case, the registrar will probably have a go using local urethral anaesthesia and plenty of lubrication.

Schriisy ...yoiu are having a tough time.

Thank you so much Sqad xx
My dad had same problem when the Dr tried at home . When he got to hosp they called a catheter expert onto the ward and it was fine. The catheter stayed in for a long time and apart from the odd occasion when I left tap open after emtying it was completely trouble free. Our poor Dads ,it's horrible when they are in pain. Good luck my thoughts are with you.

even if they cant pass the catheter, dnt worry. They can go in through the tummy (supra-pubic) which avoids the prostate entirely, or even directly to the kidneys via the back (urostomy)
