Whereas drowning or burning alive would be slow and painful until consciousness was lost.

It has to be a death where the brain is aware until the very end what is going on. Imagine being strapped down on a table, rather like James Bond was in Goldfinger, and there is a circular saw edging towards your genitals. Add to this somebody wandering along the side occasionally smashing your tib and fib with a sledgehammer and all topped up with desperate doubt that Jesus ever rose from the dead. That or drowning.
