Hello all, my Nan has recently been diagnosed with Diabetes and I was wondering if anyone knows any good diabetic food websites. A place where I can buy sweets and things for her. I have Googled but the only websites I get are not very secure, I have had problems with fraud over the internet and wouldn't like to tempt fate again. So does anyone know anywhere good online for me to buy diabetic food stuffs that is safe for me use my card??? Thanks

My husband subsribes to them and gets a magazine (Balance) every two months with all the latest info. The mag is in the shops for 2.95. If your nan is a pensioner, you get get a yearly subscription for about 8, I think, 18 a year if not.Well worth the money I think.
btw the charity doesn't advise buying diabetic chocolates, if I remember, they're a rip off.
A lot of specialist diabetic food is overpriced muck. The best approach for most people is a healthly diet - plenty of fruit and veg (although some fruit like banana can cause a spike in blood sugar, which is good if blood sugar is low, but not so good as a routine).
If you Nan likes her chocolate, then again most diabetic chocolate is rubbish. Thorntons do some good stuff, Boots is ok, but the best is the high cocao (70%) bars, particularly Green and Blacks Organic, and particularly the Black Cherry one.
One of the most practical things you can do is buy a subscription to Diabetes UK. The bi-monthly magazine has info, news and recipes. The website is below. The cookbook is a good idea - you could also look on Amazon for books on the glycemic index, essentially how much a particular type of food will affect blood sugar levels
I work in the food manufacturing industry and Bangkok is right in what he/she says, even the World Health Organisation says that most "Specialist Diabetic" food should be viewed with some sceptism. A good all round diet will be fine for your nan.........but not too many sweet things as diabetics really do need to watch their weight, dont forget that portion control is also important. All the best to your nan.
What type is it? Type 2 if it`s only controlled by diet should be easily kept in check without resorting to fancy overpriced junk. Get a test meter and watch your blood sugar levels don`t go too high, take your doc`s advice and carry on with life. Things could be worse!
Best wishes to you and your Nan.
I have a Nan with the diabetes, here is a link that has fabulous food that I also like, it is all low GI and sold be the diabetes foundation in Australia.... (the food IS really nice!)
