My uncle was born about 70years ago with a veil over his face. I know this is some kind of skin covering the face but thats all. What is it and what causes it? Is it common now?

Its known as a Caul snappy and its a thin piece of membrane, harmless and considered very lucky. Sailors would take a baby's caul to sea with them and maybe still do!

My Mum still has the one I was born with 45 years ago. A sailor friend offered her 10 for it then (don't know what it would be worth now), but I don't know if modern sailors are still that superstitious. It is said that if you have one, you will never die by drowning.
also people born with this are said to be psychically gifted.
slightly off message, but i was recently reading a book in which is was said that a caul represented wisdom. it was a work of fiction, but the sentiment seemed to be based in folk-lore.   xx
