Strange Habits in Dog!

This may sound a little strange but here goes ... we have a little doggy, about 1.5 years old who lives with us and two other cats. Everyone gets on brilliantly, no fighting or anything like that. BUT ... when we go out of the house, we quite often come back to find cat poo which has been taken out of the litter tray and moved into the living room. How do I know its not just someone having a poo in the living room I hear you say! Well, because its covered in cat litter!! So we know its Ozzy (doggy) who's picking it up from the cat litter tray (ewww!) and taking it into the next room (been putting papers down so at least the carpet doesn't get messed up).

Does anyone know why he might be doing this (apart from being a dirty little sod) and has anyone else experienced it before?!!!

Quite simply. A lot of dogs love eating cat poo. It is full of protein. One of my dogs constantly tries to get the cat poo before I do but sometimes manages to get it out. You will probably find that your little doggy has eaten some of the poo, but rejected others bits that have too much cat litter stuck on them. The answer is to put the cat litter tray somewhere that the dog can't get at it. We have a 'roofed' litter tray which makes it more difficult for the dog to get into!!

Buffymad, beware of the litter. I quote (from the article): "Additionally, clumping litter can pose a serious health threat to dogs that eat cat poop. Think of what the litter does when a cat urinates in it. Similar things can happen in a dog's stomach if it eats enough of the litter."

He is obviously trying to get the cats into trouble, by letting you think they have pooed on the carpet. Or else the cats are doing it themselves, to get the dog into trouble!

I'm glad its not just me - I'm laughing now!! Well we do have a roofed cat litter tray but he still somehow manages to squeeze himself in there (tight fit!). Oh and I can normally tell when he's been in there (apart from the poo on the floor) coz he's covered in muck - lovely !!

Don't buy the clumping litter (the cats don't like it!) - just use the lightweight stuff so hopefully thats okay.

And yes, wouldn't surprise me if it was the cats trying to blame him when they were actually the culprits!!

I buy litter pearls - non clumping and really do eliminate all odours. Seem expensive save £'s in the long run because you just remove the poo and stir in the urine which is absorbed by the pearls. Brilliant stuff - except that the cat gets bits of it out to chase round the room!!

Our little dog manages to get his head and shoulders in. I always know when he's after poo because he sort of tip toes up to the cat litter ,looking over his shoulder to see if we are looking!! Delightful habit, isn't it!! ;o)
