No idea....but here goes:

I can see no reason why heating by microwave or any other form of heating should be unsuitable for diabetics.

However, peripheral neuropathy, not uncommon in diabetics could make an excessively heated warmer (by any method of heating) undetected by the wearer with the sequelae of possibly skin burns and ulcer formation.

carlton....I have made all that up, based on a certain amount of medical principles, but perhaps another poster may have a better explanation.
there is something here along those lines.. http://www.aintreehos...icrowave_heat_pad.asp

carlton...there you are sara has given you the answer.
it's not simply because a person has diabetes that some of these things should be avoided, it's the neuropathy which can be associated with diabetes which is the problem. my son has had type 1 diabetes for 18 years. he has no signs of any neuropathy and sometimes uses things which say 'not suitablefor diabetics', in this case a microwave heated handwarmer. manufacturers are obliged to put this warning on their products.
ethandron....you are quite correct.......any Peripheral Neuropathy.

I answered the question by using diabetes as an example as I knew that carlton 23 was a diabetic.
of course i'm correct squad, i usually am ;)

Have read all your replies and thanks very much. As I have no problem with neuropathy I think I will try them for my hands which get cold due to some tablets I have to take. Happy New Year and loves you all.
