water damage and out of home for 2months
Help. Had a flood two months ago and i have a 2 year old boy. moved in with mum for a while and insurance co and loss adjusters passing me back and forward and not doing anything with my 5 calls a day. Had argument with mum so had to move out. phoned loss adjusters and said moving into hotel as not where to live before christmas in snow and they would not help. Manager from insurance so phoned and after one night in hotel arranged everything over the christmas period for me and my now 3 year old son. Now in new year he has forwarded me back to woman at loss adjusters that would not sort accomodation let alone their contractors they hired to dry the house out. House now dry and no bed or cooker or fridge freezer or tv's in the property and they want me and my son to move back in. During the christmas period I got estimates from builders and decorators as asked by loss adjusters, as theirs where too busy. Woman now saying that dismissing my estimates and she will send one of theirs to do work but wont inform my son and are where we will be staying until they have been in.
Please someone help I feel on the verge of a nervous breakdown as all i want is for my son and I to be back home as son is suffering too.
Can I now give them deadlines to complete this work as it is just taking too long and putting us under too much strain?
Also dont want their contractors want mine as trusted by word of mouth and i am single parent with young child?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.I think you may be entitled to use your own contractor BUT the insurer will only pay what they would have paid their own contractor and they are within their rights on this. Also bear in mind that your insurer should guarantee their contractors work so there should not be any arguments if any problems arise from it in the future.
i dont really see what you being a single mum has to d with you using your own contractors. Having just recvered myself from an insurance claim arising from a flood, i would peersonally leave it in the hands of their contractors, it's just too fiddly otherwise - for example, they sent me a cheque made out for the floor contractors quote, but then it was more because they came across an unexpected problem. they told me not to give the cheque to the floor people till it was done but they wanted a 25% deposit to get started. i really didnt want to send the cheque back to the insurance co and ask for one for 25% because it tiik us ages to get it out of them in the first place!
also, when we had the quotes, it was 15% vat so all the cheques are made out to the wrong amount!
Personally, i would have just preferred them to come round and sort it out themselves!

If you are concerned about who enters your home then you should ask them/the insurer if they have been police checked - but presumably you would not leave a young child alone with contractors anyway.
You are obviously very upset by this disruption to your home - but claims people are more likely to deal efficiently with you if you approach them in a calm and logical manner - dont forget they are probably working under tremendous pressure as these days most companies are working on bare minimum staffing levels which tend to rely on the goodwill of their staff when bad weather etc overloads the system.
With regard to rehousing - usually it is up to you to find somewhere and pay for it then recover from the insurer where this is covered under the policy - so if they are doing this for you they are trying to help.

I think you should go through the professional cleaning companies, who offers the best result for solving the water damage problem.
