which religion

There's a girl in my year group who has Indian parents and belongs to a religion, probably common to that part of the world. I overheard her talking about a kind of fasting that she has to take part in and was wondering what religion she could belong to, but i barely know her and aren't even sure of her name so thought it a bit rude to just walk up to her and ask.
She said something along the lines of, 'girls have to take part in it for some many years (about 10 i think), where for a week or two, you have to have no salt in your diet.' so for the (two) week (s) she was eating mainly salads and this bread she could buy/make with no salt in it, as well as a few other things. Plus how it was annoying that her mum dad and brother could have pizza but she couldn't.
does anyone have any idea what religion and festival etc it was. it may be that it happens at a certain time of the year, but she said this a few months ago but something reminded me of it and made me wonder again.
