A family friend has just lost her elderly mother. It was expected, but it is still heartbreaking for her.

I'm trying to write something in a card - just something short and simple, but which is more than just "sorry" and not anything cheesy.

Any help?

Something like - "thinking of you at this sad time". A few words are often better that something more detailed, at at time like this!
Tell her that you know that mere words will not take away the feeling of loss, but hope that she will feel supported and comforted by the fact that she is in the thoughts of her friends and family, who will do anything to help her to deal with her grief.

Might trigger a few ideas for something which is hard to get just right.
What does it say on the card e,g,In Deepest Sympathy. ?
My (our) thoughts are with you (and your family) at this very sad time.Very sincerely Yorkie.
Please accept my sincere condolences at your loss.
