One evening a week I jog around 4 miles, is it better to run a couple of hours after my evening meal or to run first and eat afterwards?

Run first & eat afterwards. Have a banana or something like that before you go tho, to boost your energy. Anything more & you might throw up or get bad tummy cramps.
by eating after you are also improving your muscles ability to take on nurishment / energy thus improving the growth of the muscles and meaning that more of the energy from your food will be utilised by the muscles rather than being stored as fat
Your metabolism is at its' peak when you have been running thus food is burned off quicker.
All the above are true, rmember that when you belly is full of food blood and energy is diverted to your stomach and gut to begin the digestion process, (this is why people feel sleepy after a big meal, less blood is circulating through the brain) this is energy that you would be better off using for your muscles while you are running.

Thanks everyone that's great.  It is so much more comfortable running first, even if I give it a couple of hours to settle!  I was just worried that it would be dead calories eating after, rather than fuel. Cheers.
