Forgive me for posting in the wrong section but id like to know your views on this. Im seeking a change of scene really badly, have been for a long time and have come up with what i see as a great idea.

I'm thinking of moving to New York. I've saved up money to rent an apartment over there and cover the first 2 months rent (no idea on apartment prices over there, was hoping £1000 would cover the first 2 months rent) I have an older friend who lives there and can possibly help with finding accommodation, i've written her and letter and am posting it off to her, just asking if she would be interested in helping. My plan is to rent somewhere for 2 months and try and find work, if i like the place stay over there for 1year working and living. I need to know about work visa's and stuff as i've no experience in doing something like this. Does anyone have any information on ANYTHING i will need to organise. Health insurance, VISA, anything like that....?? Even if you happen to know apartment prices in New York or even if you have a view on it, id love to hear from you. Im really excited about the whole thing...

I am sorry to be a wet blanket,but you won't be able to work in New York (or for that matter anywhere in the US).
To work in the US you need a work permit,what is known as a Green Card.
To obtain one of these you have to be entered in the Green Card Lottery.
Sadly the US excludes UK citizens from the Green Card Lottery (for whatever reason).
It USED to be possible to get a job with a US company first,and that would (possibly) allow you to obtain a Green Card.
Unfortunately,due to the US position in the world financial reccession President Obama has closed that loophole.
Other ABer's MAY be able to suggest other routes,but I feel that above is the present (and longt erm) situation.
I wish you luck looking for permission to work in the US,you will need it!

I have to say I have to agree with Mr Veritas, it really will not be easy if indeed possible to do properly.

US Immigration are not to be messed with and I'd strongly advise you not to find out the hard way.

thanks for your answers... Its a total bummer to find out this news. Time to look for another plan, i really need and want to move somewhere.. I've saved up enough money to do something worth while with. Thinking cap is on!

Australia & new Zealand would be easier than the US,but still require you to be on their listed of "wanted jobs".that is professions that they are short of.
Maybe they might be worth thinking about,at least they are also English speaking like the US.

Even if you are lucky enough to get the appropriate Visa, you will be hard pushed to find anywhere to live in New York for under £1500 PCM. The rental market there is unbelievable, and you get a postage stamp for your money. However, if you would be prepared to move to one of the suburbs (i.e. Brooklyn, Queens etc), then you can get lots more.
