Sat nav for a car

Whats your views on Sat Nav?..Im thinking of getting one.Any one got one & whats your thoughts on them & what should i know about them??...Thanx

I detest them - My uncle had one in his Merc and it was useless it used to tell you to turn left/right after you had passed the damned turning!   lol

I have a PDA (small handheld computer) with a separate GPS and TomTom software (Maps) which runs on the PDA. I think it is great. I wouldn't be keen to just have an in car system as the name would suggest you can only use it in the car. With a PDA you can take it with you if you wanted to go walking. (Note: TomTom only suitable for travel by road). There are lots and lots of different options available. My father got a PDA with built in GPS and loaded with maps for �250 out of LIDL or it could have been ALDI. The maps were more basic than TomTom but you get what you pay for. However, all systems will occassionally tell you to take the wrong turning and the maps when you get them will probably be a year out of date. But its still a great piece of kit 9 times out of 10.

For Christmas I bought my husband a gps system to use with a laptop, in the car. It's really good fun and interesting to use as it tells you so much information (height above sea level,speed, how far to your destination) as well as the way to go. We think it's great.

I also have a PDA with Tom Tom software and am very pleased with it, with regards to updating, without going down any political road (joke there somewhere) just stop and think how many new roads do you know that have been built during the last year?   I would be lost without mine.

Got one with as standard fitment in my Lexus IS 200. It couldn't be much simpler to operate and has proved invaluable on dozens of occasions. No more missed motorway exits, no stress on wet winter nights in unfamilar areas. Would not have a car without now. I don't know how it compares to other marques but it is good so if there are better in the market place they must be fantastic. An improvement would be to have the ability to "learn" short cuts taken regularly as it does not always take the shortest route eg leaving home it always gives a left turn whereas a right turn out of the drive will join the designated road but with less distance travelled.
