All my business life I was covered by the company scheme and it gave me access to first class diagnosis and treatment when and where I needed it. Now I'm retired it's too expensive, so I go private when I can't wait. Major stuff like my cardiac issues are now dealt with by the NHS just as effectively and often by the same consultants.
No not not paranoid pinkcowprint .I think anyone with a new baby thinks of things that could happen... but generally don't :)
We have Bupa but it's not going to save us from cancer if we get it .It may make our lives easier but it's no better than the NHS with these sort of things .Have you ever seen a BUPA ambulance :)
We have it purely because it was a perk of my husbands job when he was working .We have used it for a couple of non life threatening conditions and are about to use it again .I shall probably use it for my dodgy knee and hips at some stage .
My husband insists on having the BUPA cover and I have to admit it has been useful but I'm not fussed .
It's a big chúnk out our pensions each month .Plus you have to think of excess.Ours is a hundred quid before we even walk into the consultants office .

we too had bupa as a perk of husbands job. when he finished work 5 years ago we decided not to continue it but throw ourselves on the mercy of the nhs - so far so good.
we used it quite a lot when we were in it - 2 hip replacements and associated 4 years of investigation, heel surgery, lumps in various parts of the body (me and him), wisdom teeth extraction for our kids, dermatologist...the list goes on.
however since we've not been members, we have absolutely no complaints about the nhs. i'm not sure we would have paid to be in it, but as a perk of the job - a taxable perk - it was great. i see the same surgeon for my yearly check-up who did my ops, just see him in a different location.

I agree with those who've said you're not paranoid pinkcowprint, you're just going through what many of us go through & that's a worry surge (as I call it). Every now & then we worry about our offspring to excess (I worry about mine & they're big strapping men) but then we calm down again.
With cancer in particular jno is correct, they'll send you off asap to have any threat of it checked out. And, as I've found, you often see the same doctor as you would have had you gone privately. I'd have private cover if I could afford it as no doubt it speeds things up & that would be a huge relief to all of us. Up to now though I've found the NHS to be fine, but that's probably a lot to do with my history. Try not to worry, enjoy your little boy.
