From what I've gathered I think this is usually from parents that may have been beaten hard when they were younger and do not want to inflict this on their kids, or by soft or politically correct parents.
What would you do if your kid was not this this beautiful bundle of cotton wool that made the occasional *Boo boo* and was in fact a feral crazy swearing nightmare the kind you see on supernanny. Would you then still stand by the no smacking rule even as your kid tries to assaut you with swearwords and weapons or would you then agree that a smack on the hand could be beneficial in restoring order?

your problem is that you assume a child who isnt hit regularly is out of control, mine are well behaved and polite and they have special needs, next door have 2 girls who are shouted at and hit regularly, are they well behaved?? no they are not.

its starts from babyhood, you instill values into a child at an early age, they grow up respectful, if they misbehave they lose their priviledges.

*shouted at and hit regularly* I said a smack on the hand cazz and not violent retribution as you have put it.
it started out as a slap on the hand, it has escalated because a slap on the hand will no longer suffice.
"a feral crazy swearing nightmare " Where would a child get such behaviour from if they didnt learn it from someone else?

smacking is not a black and white issue. There are many areas inbetween.

My 2 have both been smacked, though it extremely rare. I also know of parents who dont smack who have terribly behaved children as well as those who have well behaved children. same goes for those parents who smack.

My parents smacked me, though again very rarely, and it has not meant that i lash out at my children.
I've hit mine on a few occasions but they would be for something big. As a general they do not need to be smacked as they are not that badly behaved.

The problem with these 'supernanny' kids is the parents don't deal with their behaviour consistently.

redcrx so maybe it leads to some kids need more disciplining then others? These parents that don't smack, didn't they even raise their hand or voice? I believe that not all kids need to be smacked where explaining etc will suffice but this only happens to the placid kids surely?
no shouting or smacking in our house. jno jnr's grown up fine.
as ummmm says, discipline needs to be consistent. There are parents out there who will let their children do what they want if its means an easier life for the parent.
Question Author
Red an easier life for the parent equals a harder job for the Neighbors, School, Society, Prison and the Jeremy Kyle show it seems.
lol yes, it can come to such an extreme.

have you got kids?
Yeah...but easier for the parents who can't be bothered to get off the sofa and deal with their offspring...
My son never gets smacked and he is the most polite, well behaved boy you could wish to meet.

The best way to get a child to be good is with positive reinforcement. Reward good behaviour but punish bad behaviour with withdrawal of privileges. You have to be consistent and follow through with any threats when they do misbehave.
By the way crazylegs, when I saw the title to this thread in the latest posts box I thought it was about people who beat up prostitutes.
It's question of degree. When I was in Africa I saw herds of elephants where the young bulls were kept in place by the matriarch. There was nothing excessive or brutal, just a firm nudge or tap with the trunk. Similar behaviour is common amongst the higher mammals. I don't see why a little slap on the hand will do anything more than alert a child that they've crossed a boundary. It shouldn't be as a punishment. But what do I know............I used to whack my son when he was naughty and he has grown into a very nice and calm person. On the other hand his twin daughters have never been slapped in their lives and at 6 years of age are virtually out of control.

A good smack definately restores order

Works with my wife every time?

What? - that's a no no?

You telling me I can hit children but not women?

Seriously though what sort of planet are you on?

What sort of feral child is in your fevered imagination that

"assaults you with swear words and weapons" yet "a smack on the hand restores order"?

Are there Unicorns in this scenario?
"Spare the rod and spoil the child" - How true!
Don'tcha just love people who write something and then agree with themselves in the same post?

Sign of insecurity - How true!

jake-the-peg How does disciplining a child so that they may learn so as an adult do not repeat the mistakes of a child equate to attacking an adult in your eyes?
Because the age is immaterial

You don't solve a problem by hitting someone

Children copy adults they learn that violence is a solution - it's repressed in them so they end up angry twisted individuals calling for the death penalty on websites and quoting the daily mail.

Its really sad
