^ How many joko? It has been a long time since I cycled anywhere, but I wouldn't fancy wearing one. I remember the t.v. series Robbie Coltraine did and he made reference to such a cyclist as ' here comes half a boiled egg'! As one schoolgirl who regularly made contact with the tarmac in icy conditions I admit they are a good safety feature.

yes sorry i meant how many wear them

yes i hardly see anyone wearing them...probably because of how they look...also the one i have here is very light an feels like polystyrene with a hard top bit...very odd...

just wondering whether id ever wear it...it was given to me

i know i should for safety...and could end up regretting it if i dont...

should it not be a law?
I think they should in all honesty joko. Cyclists have a hard enough time on the roads (no pun intended) and often have head injuries if they come off their bikes at any speed. I believe that cycle helmets are like any others in that they should be replaced if they have taken a hard knock as may not be fit for purpose thereafter. Mind you, my postie always has his dangling from the handlebars - nice to see he regards the welfare of his handlebars more than his titfer!
We all wear ours! My 2 know they must always wear helmets when on their bikes and have never argued about it. I wouldn't mind if it was made law although when someone said this on another website I go on they got a big backlash from people arguing that they shouldn't be forced to wear one etc.. which seems a bit odd to me when it could potentially save your life.

Fine if someone doesn't mind if they get their head smashed in but at least make your kids wear one, they don't fully understand the consequences of what could happen.
Never worn one.

Never will.
I'm really stupid and don't wear one but would never dream of getting on one of the horses wearing a riding helmet - weird.
A horse wearing a riding helmet? Can you show pictures?
The risk of head injuries from coming off a pushbike seems totally exaggerated.
Hopkirk just after I'd written that I knew someone would pick up on the bad wording - and I do editing - tut woman you're a disgrace to the profession go stand in the corner.
Ive cycled since my school days and would never wear a helmet. Just vanity I suppose. I think they look stupid. I`ll just have to hope nothing ever happens . Im not one that speeds along and the roads I do use are pretty safe.
I do think that children should wear them though as they havnt as much road awareness as we old uns
how could I have forgotten the word 'without' when that was the whole pont of the reply. definitely the naughty step all morning.
I cycle everyday and nearly get killed every day!
Trust me a helmet wouldn't help at all when you are hit by a bus,the 257 nearly nails me most mornings.
I don't wear one, must be like why you have to wear a safety belt on a plane.
Helps identify you if it crashes.
I'd never go on my MTB without a helmet ... never!

I've been over the handlebars too many times.

And yes ... I have ended up in casualty being stitched back together.

And on the roads, you never know when someone stupid is going to pull out and knock you off.

You should buy the best helmet you can justify, and WEAR IT. Mine comes further down the back of my head than those "half egg" ones. It was £120, and worth every penny.
Hi JJ, meant to ask you before (sorry, joko) - did you have a good holiday?
Fab, thanks, Boxy.

I'm sorely tempted to go back in the middle of August, if I can clear my work.

You been okay?

my boss' son (a young adult) went off the road, head first into a tree. he was in a coma for over a week and permanently lost his hearing in one ear (and couldn't follow up his dream job in the Forces). his face was unrecognisable for some time.

but if he hadn't been wearing a helmet, he'd probably have died.
Agree with sara's point.

99% of the time, you don't need them.

BUT ... on that ONE occasion when you do ...

... that doesn't want to be the time you didn't bother to wear it !
I've only been knocked off my bike once...no helmet...but didn't hit my head anyway.

Some yolk parked up his transit and as I was cycling past he opened his door and knocked me into the on coming traffic. I was very lucky...
(fingers in my ears) La La La....
^^ Yes thanks jj - our May hol seems a long way past now!
