I was diagnosed years ago, and have been on 100mcg for all this time and it dramatically changed my life. I recently went for a standard thyroid blood test (as you do) and they have decided to reduce it by 25mcg . I am extremely worried about the effect the reduction will have. Has anyone else had a reduction and noticed it? Is it normal for docs to do this after such a long amount of time?

were you feeling well on 100mcg?
Question Author
Hi Cazz yes perfect! the blood test was just a standard 12 month routine one. But I am concerned as I have this terrible fear that one day they will take me off it and health wise my life will go back to the way it was! . . . not good.
unless your levels had risen dramatically I cannot see why they would drop your meds, my doctor asks me how I feel on my dose when we have a consultation if I am feeling well and the change is minor they will leave me on it, I think its worth having a proper talk with your doctor, dont be fobbed off its your medication, your right!
My Cat had that, cost us a fortune in medication.

Give us the results of the T3, T4 TSH and we will tell you if your doctor was correct.
Phone the surgery for the results.
nice to see you acknowledging the existance of t3 finally sqad... ;)

Thanks sqad! Here is the results . . . Free Thyroxine 16.5, Free Tri-Iodothyrine 4.3, Thyroid stimulating hormone 0.08 )These results are for 100 mcg per day. (sorry misspells) !
look okay to me, all within range

have you asked why they have dropped your dose by 25??
0.3 is a bit low, so I agree with tour Dr. that it needs reducing by 25mcg.

Thanks again.

I was experiencing RLS! But I the causes of that can be varied! Wish I'd kept quiet now. THanks for looking at those for me, I think a trip to the docs may be beneficial. Do you think I will notice a difference with the reduced dose?
if they insist on doing this ask to be referred to a specialist, gps have a very dubious knowledge of thyroid management.
If you feel well now, how can a reduction in thyroxine make you feel any better?
ask for a referral nelly if they insist on dropping your dose, its a big step to drop it by 25 and you are just in the normal range. my consultant hates gps who mess around with dosage.

thanks ever so much! I'm making an appointment now :-) This is my fear, my old GP Never seemed to be sure about the results either.
i had an overactive thyroid when i was in australia 40 years ago, they wanted to operate but i decided no way and came home instead,at that time i was on neomercazole about 6 tabs a day,my dosage was going up and down til they got it right, however 2 years later they decided to operate again i was getting all prepared,i had to drink iodine with milk a few weeks before, the week i was due to go in for my op i fell pregnant,so op cancelled again,i took the tabs again,a couple of years later the specialist cut my dosage right down and finally stopped.i havent had to take another tablet since,i still get yearly blood checks and have been told if it comes back it will be the opposite of what it was,(it will be underactive) but let me tell you i felt really good and they did keep an eye on me,good luck and DONT WORRY.
dont take any crap nelly, be strong, if you ask for a referral at least a specialist in thyroid conditions will deal with it and not a gp who only has a base knowledge of the condition.
nellie, another thought.....you could take 100mcg and 75mcg on alternate days.
Question Author
. . . funnily enough, my previous GP suggested just that. I may use this option as a bargaining stance when I see my GP tomorrow. 50mcg (my starting dose) didn't affect me at all where 100mcg did.

Is it possible for Hypothyroidsm to disappear altogether?
nelly.....no.

There is an association between RLS and thyroid disorders.
what is r l s.
