My husband of 51 is considering buying a moped to commute to and from work everyday a distance of approx 25 mile round trip. He passed his car test in 1978 so can legally ride a 50cc moped without L Plates. But, if he was to de-restrict it (so he can travel at 40miles an hr where applicable instead of no more than 30 on any road) would he then need to take a cbt every 2 years? Also does anyone know if it would cost more on the insurance for doing so.
Thanks.
Jules
Legally, a moped is defined as having an engine capacity up to 50 cc and with a design speed not exceeding 50 kph (31 mph). If the vehicle is de-restricted to enable it to noticeably exceed 31 mph it no longer qualifies as a moped i.e. it is classed as a motorcycle, and as such the licence requirements for riding a motorcycle (CBT etc.) must be adhered to.
