Renault megane coupe, engine not turning over

This morning i tried to start my 98 coupe and nothing happened, just rapid clicking. It has been recovered and towed away, wouldn't even jump start. The recovery guy was stumped, said the engine wasn't feeding info to the starter???? Any ideas what could be wrong? Its in the hands of my local Renault garage and being a woman i want an idea of whats wrong so i don't look stupid or get ripped off!

Hi grimble73, I had a similar problem on a Honda Accord a few years back, turned out it was a relay switch in the ignition circuit. A new relay then was about �100, but found one in a scrapyard for a tenner.

Just got my car back, it was my dodgy thatcham alarm, they had to disable it cos it was over-riding the starter motor. renault robdogs charged me 1.5 hours labour for it. Thanks for your reply though :-)

Ooh right, yes never gave that a thought, thinking of something far more basic. Car electronics can be notoriously difficult to sort out sometimes and can give you surprising answers as well.
