What is this thing?

Years ago I bought a necklace in Bellingham, Northumberland, in a shop that sold all hippy, new age type stuff. It is a silver coloured metal, double sided face, African in appearance. Whilst fiddling with it tonight I discovered that the thong comes away from the main face and has a long, pointy metal stick in it and the inside is hollow but does not hold much water (I tried).
What's it for please?

does the pointy metal stick have a little scoop on the end? if so its for something a bit harder than herbal products!
