What would either of these tell you about cartilidge damage? What repair work could be done? Why does one of my knees feel kinda crumbly and crunchy when I flex it, and the other one is smooth. I mean by that, an irregular movement, kind of not smooth. Also, why would that make it more prone to the occassional 'popping' when I walk about.
It feels sore in the cold.
doc useless, btw.

If you say your 'doc is useless' - perhaps you'd be better off changing your GP for advice & diagnosis.
completely agree with Smudge.  Get a new doctor asap.  He obviously hasn't even managed to answer your most basic questions so you surely have to see someone else?
I saw a specialist and another "top guy": they can 'do a scan' and 'go in with the optics' but it won't sort it out in the long run.
Does anyone know what kind of damage causes these symptoms? I do a lot of skiing/boarding and extreme sports, but have never had a major major fall.
You may wish to try physiotherapy also, it may be that the muscles have tightened and are displacing the joint structure via the tendons.
Change your doctor, or see a private specialist.
I've had keyhole surgery on my knee twice now 20 years apart and it feels as good as new within a couple of months. Other knee no problems at all.  Both ops, in and out the same day.
Artemis, I'm glad to hear that. Someone suggested that opening up the "sealed joint" might compromise it, is that not the case with keyhole? And what did they do when they were in there, might I ask?
I hope your knee gets better soon.
Scrape and cut any loose bits of cartalage that are probably causing the pain

Are you identical twins with the same problem knees?  Having more than one identity gets terribly difficult in the end.  It happened to me when I tried it!   Smile :o)

Sorry to post this on a serious thread and I do sympathise with you about your knee problem.  Talk to your doctor there are many other problems you can have with knees.  My son has had various problems.

Looks like the particular problem I have is a cartilage problem. Going in and scraping sounds more painful than what I have now!!! Is that under local anaesthetic? Were you out of action Artemis?
Many thanks all for your help with knee.

I meant my last message 'having read FP's link'. It seems a pretty good site, thanks, but who knows when damage was done? Everyone bangs there knee into something hard from time to time, right?

Artemis, why does the cold aggravate it so much? I can hardly really walk with it at the moment.
Although you addressed your question to Artemis, I just thought I would tell you that my son phoned me today to tell me that his knee is so painful because of the cold that at the moment that he is living on paracetamol.  The cold seems to affect any joints that have problems.  I have arthritis in my knees and hips and would love to move to warmer climes where my aches and pains instantly improve.

Slightly lost the plot here as I don't quite know who I'm replying to.

Anyway the Arthroscopy(sp) as it's known was in my case under a general anaesthetic(sp).and I was walking straight away albeit limping. But after 2/3 weeks no limping,no pain.

The cold business sounds like arthritis.

I would say any competent Doctor should know the difference, and should be consulted rather than take my word for it.

IDIOTIC - if you do gymnastics it will help strenghten your cartilages and your knees will fell much better.

That was a joke IDIOTIC. thought I'll cover myself before the Ab editor comes after me.

Artemis/Dark Angel, what is the relationship between strength of muscle around knee and stress put on joint? Do your knees have to put up with too much unless you have good muscle to carry the load?
