Try essence of peppermint, it used to work for me.
I don't know about the painkillers but when you go to the chemist, buy a bottle of oil of cloves. A dab on the affected tooth should numb it quite a bit
Ibuprofen 600mgms should do the trick.

redhelen is right......lemon strepsil must contain a small dose of local anaesthetic.
They do a nurofen which contains codeine I had it a couple of weeks ago when I had a tooth abcess, Hope she feels better soon.
try just toothpaste sometime it would numb the nerve .worth a try
hi bernie,
hows your wifes toothache tonight?
the poor thing. nothing worse. i hope its a bit easier for her.
when ive had really cronic toothache ive bought a tube of extra strength oragel.
it really is good for numbing the area a bit.
also redhelens suggestion with placing a strepsil on the affected area too, i used 'rinsteads'.
and also oil of cloves as mrs o suggested.
i was advised by the hospital when i had mine, that resting your face on a covered hot water bottle is not a good idea (i always used one for some comfort) but he said it increases the blood flow or something which didnt help with the pain.
hope the pain killers are having some effect..
