Everyone in school was touched

there's a boy from my high school (never knew him personally) who is about 15 who had brain and spinal cancer last year, but I think he recovered, but never quite fully or it might have been the chemo etc making him weak.
But a couple of days ago he had a stroke and is now paralysed and has been given a few more days to live.
I've never seen the school effected like this before, even when a teacher died (I didn't know him either, so not sure if he was very popular). There were assemblies for all the three lower school year groups but sixth formers didn't and i don't really want to ask what was said. My chemsitry teacher is the deputy head so probably told us the jist of it (as above), but after the assemblies, there were people (girls, boys and even a teacher) in the corridoors crying.
have you ever witnessed something similar? 9as in the people being effected not what is actually happening to him).

It's something that can happen in communites like schools Milly, even if you dont know the person they're part of the school, I saw it several times when I worked in the pits, everbody felt it when there was a fatality or major accident even if it wasn't your pit involved. I thinks it's often a case of "there but for fortune" and the realisation that these things can happen any time or at any age
