Nice try vib ...er Trigger, but I think she's more of a 'hit and run' poster.
Children get a taste for alcohol where its accessible. Even babies having alcohol added to bottles for sleep (common years ago) can develop a dependancy.

Dependancy maybe where alcohol comes a disease ?

^^Like all those drunken teenagers in places like France and Spain (not tourists)
I've no idea of others upbringing. I put that out as an observation rather than accusatory.
Well I was brought up in a pub and didn't drink until my 20's...

I'd strongly disagree with you Umm

I was what you would call an Alcohol dependant.

When I eventually managed to stop I didn't have physical "cold turkey symptoms"

It wasn't simple though and it certainly wasn't easy - I failed the first time

Maybe you didn't mean to make it sound that way but it sounded a bit like it.

You want to give up smoking people say well done

Tell them you're giving up drink they say "Why? not completely surely, a small one now and then - at Christmas - etc etc"

It's as if they think you giving up alcohol is some sort of judgement on them
I was brought up in an alcohol free home and have little desire for alcohol.

I didn't mean for it to sound like it was that easy. I know it's not...I was just giving Pinkilady a brief explanation. More about 'real' alcoholics, which someone else mentioned, and the physical addiction.
My Mum was brought up in a pub and has never drank, besides a babycham on NYE.
Eating disorders are classed as dieases, too, soaps. Can I assume you believe this is rubbish, too?
..like I said earlier, Soaps appears to be a 'hit and run' poster who just pops in every now and then to post a token bit of badly thought out rubbish.
I worked with a true alcoholic many years ago and one quiet moment we began to chat. I asked him why he could not just stop drinking as it was ruining his life, love life, health and just about everything else to do with him.

He said that I had to imagine a real desire for something. Not just that you want it but a real, real need for something. That could be food when you are absolutely starving or a drink of cold water after a blistering day on the beach or as he also said feeling the 'need' to orgasm when one was so close it was almost impossible not to. That my friend (he said) is what ist is like when I say I need a drink. I just have to have one.

For those interested he finally did give it up with much help from the hospital and his partner. However, sasdly it was too late because of the damage done physically and he died about three years on.

RIP chum.
:-(

My Dad died from drink related illness and he wasn't an alcoholic :-(
Being an alcoholic does have it's benefits.....
