we have just received a letter telling us we had won a shed load of money through the european lottery. the company concerned called themselves Euro Union Lottery Promotions and gave an address in New Oxford Stree, London and an 0800 telephone no. a man calling himself Paul Robinson and with a very strong african accent answered. said if we wanted the money not to give bank details, although that would help with payment.they asked for them on enclosed form. he asked us to send the form back.
as we don't buy lottery tickets of any kind this seemed to be an unlikely win informed local police in case they had method of informing other organisation to warn vulnerable people or those who care for vulnerable people. they were not really interested so i thought it might be an idea to let all you lovely people know.
just so that you are aware that this has come back again.

perhaps let your local trading standards office know rather than the police
You actually phoned the number?
I got one a few years back saying that I'd won millions of Euros in the Spanish Lottery. I sent it to Watchdog and 3 weeks latter they did a report on it.

hi red did as you suggested and they referred me to Consumer Direct who very very interested and wanted further details of them. just know there are so many vulnerable and trusting people that they need warning about this.
what a serious subject for a monday
ah good, trading standards (or consumer direct as parts of it are called) can be very helpful and, i believe, do have power to close these outfits if they have enough evidence of scams.
Thats a money scam.
Few days ago, I received an email from HMRC, it was a fake email stating the amount of refund i was entitled to claim for the tax year 2009/10. I also receive emails from HSBC to ask me for my bank account details. I have not account in HSBC.

In addition, i also receive fake emails asking me if i want money trasnfer to my account from the caiman island. This is ridiculous. People should be aware of this money scams going on the emails. There are plenty of them. Best thing file a report to the police for investigation.
why'd you go to the local nick?
you should call crimestoppers.

emails are one thing but there are a lot of elderly people who do not have a computer and something like this coming through the post can be tempting. I am sure they think "ooh that would be nice for me to treat, not just themselves, but family and friends". and then they give away details they should keep to themselves.

ankou - did not know where to go so that others could be warned and thought that police might be able to assist in that direction.
I've had a couple of telephone calls in the recent past saying something similar. I just say b***er off and put the phone down. I don't even give them a chance because I know I have not bought any tickets so how the devil can I win anything?
