Symptons of heroin?

There was this article in my local paper earlier about how the police are cracking down on prostitution in Portsmouth, and they printed pictures of several well know local girls...they all seemed to have really scraggy , gaunt, faces, is this a sympton of drug abuse?

addiction yes. heroin addicts are normally very thin, gaunt face, no ass. Other druggies have less visible symptoms.

Heroin ravages the human body like few other drugs. Inherent in the grip of addiction is the obsession with obtaining a fix, even before basics like food, drink, and personal hygene - hence the cadaverous appearence of advanced addicts.

Sad statistics advise that 100% of street walkers either have a heroin habit, or are supporting a boyfriend or pimp who has one.

Take a look at the pictures in that link to see the effects of heroin on the body(don't worry, they are all facial pictures, nothing gory).  They were used by the Metropolitan Police as part of their anti drug campaign.

I was always worried about the 'heroin chic' phase that models went through,starting with Kate Moss.  Imagine someone actually sitting down and saying 'we're going to hire girls so skinny they look like they're on drugs and get the public to find that attractive and consider them postive role modesl'.  Grr
