Hi all,
hope you are having a good evening. Granddaughter has bought a daihatsu YRV, 1300 cc car. was o.k. at first, but now a terrible steering wobble has suddenly appeared. when you pull away, and up to about 20mph the steering wheel goes from side to side, and the whole car is wobbling. i assumed it was a buckled wheel, but jacked the car up and spun the wheels, one had a slight buckle type movement, nothing severe, so i changed it for the spare, still the same. Should i now change the back wheels to the front, just in case, or could something else be wrong? the wobble at 10 mph is so bad that if you try to talk your voice trembles with the wobbles.
thanks ,
annie.
You say that the problem has "suddenly appeared"....so I'm not sure that tonyav's suggestion is relevant.
There are lots of ideas/suggestions here.....
If the rubber boot on one of the CVJs has split and grit got into the joint you can get those symptoms. I think you should be able to check that by jacking up the front of the car, starting the engine, putting the car in 1st gear and letting the clutch out so that the front wheels rotate. There is no need to rev the engine - tick-over speed will do. You may see one of the wheels wobbling. DO MAKE SURE THE CAR IS FIRMLY CHOCKED AND PROPERLY SUPPORTED WHILST DOING THAT.
Has she hit the kerb maybe - sounds like the steering alignment is seriously out of whack or maybe she's damaged one of the wheels - whatever, take it to a tyre fitters and have the steering alignment checked.
On the one hand I admire the bravery of somebody willing to drive this death trap, on the other hand, get it off the road and checked properly before somebody gets injured or killed.
The problem you describe is too severe for just an out of balance wheel.
There is a fault in the steering system. You need to get a mechanic to look at it. I would not drive it even to a garage, get it towed or get someone to come out to you to look at it.
