Have The Scales Fallen From Trump's Eyes?
I must admit that President Trump has risen a bit in my estimation after his outspoken criticism of the genocidal Assad. Yes one can certainly argue that it should have happened long ago and equally that the Syrian dictator probably felt he had a freer hand with the seeming washing of American hands and the assertiveness of his ally in genocide Putin. But maybe better late than never,

Trump needs to tread carefully, we dont want another Middle East dictator toppled over WMD especially without 100% proof. We have been there before and still suffering the consequences.

Trump almost certainly DOES have proof. Of course Assad had been murdering 'little babies' for years and for a long time it meant more to Trump to make political capital out of the situation than to acknowledge this. And many of us it seems are still at that stage.
As to what one actually does about it, well we're back to the same old problem: military intervention would make little sense. But the US has hinted at unilateral action of some sort if, as seems likely, Russia uses its UNSC veto to prevent the UN doing anything, as it has consistently done ever since Assad started.
A UNGAINLY vote to skint them off the UNSC would be an idea, but I don't know if that would be a goer.
Of course the current situation in Europe with refugees, never mind in Syria itself, shows that we already in a dire situation. And that just ignoring the world's problems does not always work.

When I posted details of a previous war crime committed by Assad last year, again using poison gas, there were people on here that came to Assad's defence, and tried to make out that the incidents hadn't happened.
Well, now its happening again. Sarin gas can't be made on a kitchen table by some terrorist....its a highly sophisticated and dangerous chemical compound. And yet Assad the Butcher and his crony, Putin are trying to tell make out it was some ghastly mistake.
If Trump really is waking up to reality, then I will be the first to show him my support, but so far, its just some histrionics at the UN in New York.

As far as 'proof' goes, only the Syrian government and the Russians would be flying in that area for a start and not even the Syrian government is claiming otherwise. Russia's cock and bull story is that the Syrians hit a rebel munitions store which, naturally, happened to contain sarin for use in Iraq. Despite the lack of any conflagration in the area, or the fact that destroying this material would, actually, you know, destroy it. Then there are the holes in the ground caused by the dropping of the canisters. So, you know, if you don't want to believe then fine ...
I think pragmatism is an asset most politicians have - certainly before reaching anything like high office, because without it, they don't get high office, so a sort of natural selection kicks in.
Mr Trump of course is not a politician, and seems quite proud of the fact - it may well have assisted his election.
But as Mr Trump is reluctantly learning, slowly, and not always well - although he is not a politician, politics is now his day job, and some of the advisers he ignores the rest of the time will actually have got through to him that saying nothing, and tacitly supporting Putin who supports Assaad will do his image some serious damage.
It is of course self-serving, but then what politician isn't - so at least Mr Trump's default position, and the right thing to do, are aligned for once.

Almost everyone points the finger at Assad and yet there is as yet no proof, I'm not saying he's innocent but the big question is, why would he do such a thing now? He is still in a strong position, Isis is all but finished, so why should he sanction such an appalling act?
It seems that the forces which would benefit most would be the rebels in an attempt to discredit him and turn everyone, including, and most importantly Trump, which appears to be working.

When you obtain, and retain power by shedding innocent blood, it's no problem to shed a little more from time to time, just to remind everyone who is in charge.
That's the only reason needed.

Before action I would want to see real proof. It's amazing that when Mr Trump says he has something on Assad all the liberals jump up and down shouting he has proof but when he says it about anything else the liberal elite all jum up and down saying "Mr Trump cant possibly have proof" !!
Assad is a brutal nasty piece of work, no one in their right mind would deny that. But trial by media is not on even for him.

I find it very difficult to believe. Why on earth would Assad do this now. It would be like winning the lottery and then holding the local petrol station up at gunpoint. Madness.
Mikey keeps repeating the fact that Assad used chemical weapons before. The UN investigated that and came to the conclusion that the Islamists were responsible.

Somebody fired sarin or some chemical at those people. The question 'why would he do this' can be easily answered by the fact that he's done it before and got away with it and to a man of his obvious moral scruples it would not trouble him to do it again. I suspect Mr Putin might be a bit cross about it however. They must be running out of excuses to cover for him. And that's being as kind as I can to the Russian president.
Any other frankly pathetic attempts to explain this are little better than the 9/11 conspiracy nonsense. But we live in a time of endless relativistic muddying of facts and morals, a fact that agents like Assad and Putin know only too well. There are enough people willing to believe the uncomfortable truth, and besides of course , if desperate, one can always fall back on that 'well anyway, we're no better' argument
